Augst D "Daechwita" : Interpretation/Explanation

In 2016, Suga released his first mixtape "Augst D". After four years of anticipation, finally he dropped his second mixtape. "Daechwita" is the title track of the mixtape. In this blog, I will try to explain the meaning behind the track after having watched the music video.

"Daechwita" in Korean culture is the traditional instruments or music played by marching army. Simply, it is the music played to denote the presence of the King or played during King's arrival.

In the MV Suga plays the role of the tyrant King and also of the coup leader. Metaphorically, The tyrant King is his alter ego and the coup leader is his present self.

Augst D (his present self)

With the success and fame comes the arrogant self. One may think that he is the greatest of all. And alter ego makes rules for himself. You can see in the MV that everyone bows to the tyrant King and no one dares to look at him.

On the other hand, Suga tries to stay humble. He protests against his alter ego. Those six other people in the background represents other members of the team. With the help of his member, he keeps his reality check. Also says a lot about how they are always there for him.

Suga (his present self) after going against the King(his alter ego) is now imprisoned. The tyrant King executes anyone who goes against his will. This can be referred to as the fame, money, success might make people forget their place from where they came.

In the early scene, we can see Suga looking at the butcher. The butcher works as the Executioner for the King. Later, on the time of execution butcher helps Suga to kill the King.

Many interpretations can be made from this. What I believe is, Suga with the help of the locals, Army, family, members keeps his reality check. He knows he began with nothing and he'll never let money, fame, pride take over him.

The whole track shows the internal battle between an alter ego and a sane self. It consists lots of conflicts within him.

"Glitter , glitter, look at my crown" says one of his inner voice.

" Remember, remember, days gone by remember". This voice asks not to forget about hardships and struggles.

"Who's the King , who's the boss?

You all know my name

All shit talk they got no game

Off with their heads, ah."  ~ this is the tyrant King.

"Yeah, what's next? Here comes my reality check, there’s nowhere higher

I only looked up and now I want to look down and put my feet on the ground

I'm a king, I'm a boss

Remember my name

All shit-talk they got no game

Off with their heads." ~ This is Suga talking.

Even though he knows he reached his goals he wants to stay grounded and humble, unlike his alter ego.

And this conflict is beautifully presented in the lyrics and the music video.

This is what I personally understood from the MV. There are many historical references made in the lyrics and as well as in the MV. Music is an art. Art can be understood and explained by each individual in  different ways. So, this was my way of interpretating "Daechwita". If you have your own then I would definitely love to read yours. 💜
